Europe's regulators hand oncology a run of positive opinions before ESMO Madrid, while the money-losing end of the sector shows how costly the next wave is

Europe's drug regulator issued positive opinions on RASONQUE, Libtayo dosing and Trodelvy plus Keytruda this summer and autumn, just before ESMO opens in Madrid. SEC-checked figures for Summit Therapeutics show what the pipeline costs. We flag where the evidence is thin or the sources are weak.

The European Medicines Agency's drug-assessment committee, the CHMP, has been busy. In the days before the oncology world gathers in Madrid, it adopted a positive opinion recommending marketing authorisation of RASONQUE (daraxonrasib), a once-daily oral tablet, as monotherapy for adults with metastatic pancreatic adenocarcinoma who have had at least one prior systemic therapy.1 A day later it backed an alternative dosing schedule for Libtayo across all approved indications: 700 mg as a 30-minute IV infusion every six weeks, after an initial 12 weeks of 350 mg every three weeks.2 A CHMP opinion is a recommendation, not an authorisation, and we treat it that way throughout.

This piece is built on a limited dossier. Where it is thin for a European business reader, we say so rather than fill the gap.

Europe's regulatory run

The July 2026 CHMP positive opinion for Gilead's Trodelvy plus Keytruda in PD-(L)1-positive first-line metastatic triple-negative breast cancer is the clearest European case in the material. Gilead's announcement said a second first-line approval would establish Trodelvy as a backbone therapy across PD-L1 status in the European Union.3 It cited the ASCENT-04/KEYNOTE-D19 trial, which showed a highly statistically significant and clinically meaningful reduction in the risk of disease progression or death.3

Evandro de Azambuja said: "People with metastatic triple-negative breast cancer need effective treatment options as early as possible in the course of their disease."3 The dossier notes that, if authorised, the combination would build on the recent approval of Trodelvy monotherapy.3

The Libtayo change is not a new drug but a convenience change. The six-weekly schedule means fewer infusion visits, which matters to hospitals managing capacity as well as to patients.2 The dossier does not quantify any cost or capacity effect, so we do not.

Madrid is the stage

The ESMO Congress runs October 23-27, 2026 in Madrid, according to our event record. Our topic summary gave October 23-24, so the sources differ on how long the congress runs. The longer window comes from the event record, which we treat as the more specific of the two.4 AbbVie will present new and updated data across seven assets in lung, colorectal, ovarian, prostate and gastric cancers, which it describes as its largest ESMO program to date.5 Moderna and Merck plan to present detailed intismeran results on October 24 and to engage with regulators on potential filings.11

Antibody-drug conjugates: the theme, and a reliability caveat

Antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs) pair a targeting antibody with a toxic payload. Akari Therapeutics argues that patients whose cancer has stopped responding to ADCs are a significant, growing unmet need and an exclusive opportunity for its novel payload, one that current and most future ADCs will not be able to access.6 Its lead candidate, AKTX-101, is planned to enter Phase 1 clinical development in mid-2027.6 That is a company's own pitch for a drug that has not yet been given to patients.

Source reliability matters here. The wire-service documents behind this piece, including Akari's, come from a feed where Via News's checks found 56% of 5,087 checked claims held up.6 Company press releases are promotion, and roughly four in ten checked claims from this feed did not hold up. Read every company statement here with that in mind.

Real-world evidence from Germany, and a European launch

Two items are European at source. The final MINT study analysed 109 patients from 18 German centres treated with mogamulizumab (Poteligeo) for mycosis fungoides and Sézary syndrome.8 The primary endpoint, median time to next treatment, was 14.9 months, with a 62.4% best overall response rate and a 20.2-month overall median progression-free survival.8 This is routine-care data rather than a controlled trial, which is its value to payers and its limit as proof.

Novocure, headquartered in Baar, Switzerland, reported second-quarter 2026 net revenues of $184 million, up 16% year-over-year, driven by 18% global active-patient growth.7 It received a CE Mark for Optune Pax in locally advanced pancreatic cancer, with Germany the first EU market to launch and more than 280 active patients as of June 30, 2026.7 Frank Leonard said: "This was our strongest quarter to date, with record net revenues and active patients on therapy."7

What it costs: Summit Therapeutics, from SEC filings

Summit is not a European company, and the dossier links it to no European regulatory event. Our topic summary lists a trial collaboration among Summit, AstraZeneca and Daiichi Sankyo, but the dossier holds no source document for it, so we do not rely on it. Summit does give us checked numbers on what a development-stage oncology company burns. It reported zero revenue in both FY2023 and FY2024.10

Its net loss was $614.9 million in FY2023, $221.3 million in FY2024 and $1,079.6 million in FY2025.10 The FY2025 loss is nearly five times FY2024's. Net loss per share was -$0.99, -$0.31 and -$1.44 across the same years.10 Operating cash outflow, a cleaner measure of money actually spent, rose from $76.8 million in FY2023 to $142.1 million in FY2024 and $322.9 million in FY2025.10 Capital expenditure rose from $128,000 to $139,000 and then to $657,000, which is small beside the operating burn.10

Cash on hand moved sharply. It was $71.4 million at FY2023 year-end, $104.9 million at FY2024 and $225.3 million at FY2025.10 It then fell to $106.5 million in Q1 2026 and stood at $419.4 million in Q2 2026.10 The dossier does not say what produced the Q2 2026 rise, so we do not guess. The pattern is a company whose cash balance depends on outside funding, which is typical before a product earns revenue.

Our topic summary also lists McKesson and CD&R's purchase of Option Care Health as evidence of capital flowing into the sector. The dossier shows only that Option Care is headquartered in Bannockburn, IL and covered by Zacks research, with no deal terms. We cannot verify or size that deal here.

AI-driven discovery: promise, with a weak source

The lab-of-the-future idea comes from Puja Sapra in an MIT Technology Review piece. She described a system that works like a self-driving car: "this system uses AI to make predictions, robotic systems to execute experiments, and instruments to generate data."9 She also said: "One of the hardest problems in de novo design is predicting whether a computationally generated molecule will be safe in the human body."9 That admission is the key point for investors, because the hardest step remains unsolved.

She also stressed human involvement: "With more autonomous systems, human oversight remains at the heart of this approach."9 And she said: "Scientists will work hand-in-hand with these model systems."9

Our checks on this source are weak. Of 11 claims checked from the piece, none held up, a measured reliability of 0%.9 The sample is small, but we are not treating the article's claims as established. Our topic summary connects AstraZeneca to this push, but the dossier's graph shows only that AstraZeneca develops ENHERTU (with Daiichi Sankyo), savolitinib, Rilvegostomig and Durvalumab. It does not show AstraZeneca running an AI lab.

What to watch

  • Whether the European Commission follows the CHMP opinions for RASONQUE, Libtayo dosing and Trodelvy plus Keytruda. The dossier shows opinions only.
  • AbbVie's seven-asset ESMO data and the Moderna and Merck intismeran presentation on October 24.5,11
  • Whether Summit's Q2 2026 cash of $419.4 million holds up against an operating burn that reached $322.9 million in FY2025.10
  • Whether Novocure's German launch of Optune Pax grows beyond its 280-plus patients.7

Q4 2026 Biopharma Catalyst Crunch: Late-Stage Readouts and Regulatory Milestones Converge on the Ivonescimab PDUFA Date
October 2026 is dense with clinical and regulatory news. Phase 3 trials hit primary endpoints (ALOFT-IPF, RESTORE-3), long-term data came out (MIUDELLA at 6 years, QUILT-3.032), and the FDA accepted Roche's vamikibart BLA. Scholar Rock resubmitted its apitegromab MAA to the EMA. The next catalysts are ESMO 2026 (Oct 23) and the Nov 14 FDA PDUFA date for ivonescimab, followed by Maritime-1 primary completion in January 2027. The speculative QAIAx items (QIII pilot, microcities patent) are a weak, tangential thread with little financial substance.

Both facts record the same metric (shares_outstanding) for ING Group at the identical observation date (2025-12-31). FACT A states 2,902,437,688 shares; FACT B states 2,902 million shares (2,902,000,000). The difference is 437,688 shares (~0.015%). This is a genuine value conflict, though the discrepancy appears to result from FACT B rounding to the nearest million while FACT A provides the precise count.
