Chip equipment sells out while chemicals and railways cut costs: what Q3 CFO commentary says, with Europe's energy bill at the centre

Third-quarter calls from Lam Research, Dow and Union Pacific show a split economy. AI-driven chip demand is outrunning supply, while industrials rely on cost cuts against high energy and fuel prices. Dow's comments on European energy costs are the most direct link to European readers. Figures come from SEC-checked data and verbatim call quotes.

Two things can be true in the same earnings season. One group of companies says demand is larger than it can supply. Another says its main task is to cut costs so that earnings survive expensive energy. The third-quarter 2026 calls from Lam Research, Dow and Union Pacific show both. For a European reader, the most direct link is Dow's CFO, Jeffrey Tate, who said: "Persistently high energy costs continue to challenge industry economics."1 Dow's commentary also noted that record-low water on the Rhine disrupted logistics.1

This piece is deliberately cautious about Europe. The dossier contains no European revenue splits and no EU regulatory ruling for these companies. Where Europe appears, we say so. Where it does not, we do not guess.

Europe's energy bill, as heard on Dow's call

Dow reported net sales up 13% year over year, with growth in every operating segment, and operating EBITDA of more than $1.5 billion, according to CEO Karen Carter.1 The company says it is protecting earnings through its own actions rather than waiting for conditions to improve. Carter said the "Transform to Outperform" programme is on track for about $700 million in growth and productivity improvements this year. It includes the reduction of about 4,500 Dow roles, of which about 70% have been implemented.1

Tate set out the savings arithmetic. He said the company remains focused on "approximately $1.3 billion in net benefits this year as well as $1.3 billion in 2027."1 Selling, general and administrative costs (the line Dow calls SARD) were, in his words, "actually down $130 million" from the previous quarter.1 The third-quarter sequential improvement from self-help exceeded $150 million.1

The fourth-quarter outlook is modest. Tate said the usual seasonal weakness "will be largely offset by more than $100 million of lower sequential turnaround spending".1 He expects global polyethylene integrated margins to improve by about $0.02 per pound compared with the third quarter.1 A 2-cent improvement is not a recovery.

What the verified filings show

The SEC-checked figures explain why management is focused on costs. Dow's revenue fell from $44.622 billion in fiscal 2023 to $42.964 billion in 2024 and $39.968 billion in 2025.3 That is a drop of roughly 10% over two years. Earnings per share went from $0.82 to $1.57, then to a loss of $3.70 in 2025.3 Operating cash flow, the cash the business actually generates, fell from $5.196 billion to $2.914 billion and then to $1.032 billion, a fall of about 80% in two years.3

Cash on the balance sheet moved around more. It stood at $3.816 billion at the end of fiscal 20253 and at $4.110 billion in the first quarter of 2026.3 In the third quarter of 2025 it was $4.609 billion.3 The share count rose from 702,293,433 in fiscal 2023 to 717,534,072 in 2025.3 That is a small increase, but it means any profit is spread across more shares.

Against that backdrop, Tate's liquidity statement matters: "We have approximately $14 billion of liquidity and no substantive debt maturities until 2029."1 That is more than three times the year-end 2025 cash balance in the filings.1,3 Dow reported third-quarter free cash flow of $1.1 billion and a sequential working-capital improvement of about $1.3 billion. Tate also pointed to 2027 cash conversion of 70% to 80%.1

Via News's reading of this data is that Dow is using cost cuts and balance-sheet strength to bridge a period of weak earnings. Management's own remarks about energy costs suggest it does not expect the underlying conditions to fix themselves. That is our analysis, not a company statement.

The other side: chip equipment cannot be built fast enough

Lam Research, which makes wafer fabrication equipment used to produce chips, described the opposite problem. CEO Timothy Archer said that in the September quarter Lam "again delivered record revenue and profitability", with operating margin topping 40% for the first time.2 He put preliminary 2027 spending on wafer fab equipment at more than $200 billion, with growth led by DRAM, then leading-edge foundry and logic, then NAND.2

CFO Douglas Bettinger guided to December-quarter revenue of $8.6 billion, plus or minus $400 million, and earnings per share of $2.33, plus or minus $0.15.2 He added a caveat: "This revenue guide would have been a bit higher, if not for some near-term supply chain constraints that we are actively managing."2 Asked about demand beyond what Lam can supply, he declined to give a figure: "I'm not going to put a number on what the unconstrained demand would be." The call nonetheless indicated it would be higher.2

The company's own graph in our dossier lists Lam as a supplier to hyperscalers, the large cloud-computing providers.2 It also lists ASML Holding among its competitors.2 We have no verified data on Lam's European customers or sales, so we cannot say how much of this demand reaches European suppliers.

Rail: fuel is the cost to beat

Union Pacific reported net income of $2.1 billion and adjusted earnings per share up 15% to $3.53, on 6% volume growth. CEO Vincenzo Vena also noted that "Higher fuel prices were a big cost driver."4 CFO-level commentary quantified it: "Fuel expense grew 69% on a 64% increase in average fuel price," with the average price going from $2.56 to $4.21 per gallon.4 Management also said it will keep building cash "in anticipation of closing the Norfolk Southern merger in the second half of 2027."4

The pattern matches Dow's. Both companies are growing but are being squeezed by an energy input, and both lean on efficiency and cash management to hold their earnings.

Agentic AI in finance: early, and a vendor's claim

SAP SE, a European software company, used its SAP Connect event on 6 October to present what it calls the Autonomous Enterprise. CEO Christian Klein said: "This is a breakthrough moment for business AI." He added that "The Autonomous Enterprise has arrived."5 This is a company press release about its own product, not an independent finding, and it does not by itself show how widely finance departments have adopted such tools.

How far to trust the sources

The call summaries for Dow, Lam and Union Pacific come from NewsEOD. In Via News's measurement, 60% of 1,107 checked claims from that source held up against their sources.1,2,4 The SAP press release comes from a source where 52% of 6,149 checked claims held up.5 Those rates are no better than a coin-flip-plus, which is why we have quoted the executives' words rather than paraphrasing them. We cannot yet check the third-quarter 2026 figures against filings. The SEC-verified Dow data in this article runs only to the first quarter of 2026.3

What to watch

  • The FDA has set a target decision date of 14 November 2026 for Summit Therapeutics' ivonescimab application.6
  • Origin Bancorp has crossed the $10 billion asset threshold. From mid-2027 the Durbin Amendment is expected to cost it $4 million to $4.5 million in interchange fees.6
  • Whether Dow's promised $1.3 billion of net benefits in both 2026 and 2027 shows up in the filings.1
  • Whether Lam's supply constraints ease enough for it to meet the 2027 demand it describes.2
  • Whether Union Pacific's fuel costs keep outrunning its volume growth.4

ESMO 2026 Oncology Catalyst Cluster: Ivonescimab's PDUFA Date and Small-Cap Biotech Delistings
ESMO 2026 (Oct 22-24) concentrates a wave of oncology readouts. Summit's ivonescimab (10 presentations, positive HARMONi-GI1 OS, new EA2251 Phase II/III with ECOG-ACRIN) leads, ahead of its FDA PDUFA date of 2026-11-14, and Daiichi Sankyo's DXd ADC platform (REJOICE-Ovarian, DESTINY-Lung04, TUXEDO-3) follows. At the other end of the capital-markets spectrum, micro-cap Spago Nanomedical is moving to delist from Nasdaq First North (board resolution Oct 22, EGM Nov 19, application Jan 2027). Pivotal data and regulatory milestones are rewarding well-funded late-stage players, while cash-constrained early-stage developers are exiting public markets.

Ford Motor Company
Both facts give cash for Ford Motor Company at the same point in time (2025-12-31; FY 2025 year-end and Q4 2025 year-end are the same date). Both are labelled USD, but the values are 23,356,000,000 and 23.356, which cannot both be true in USD. The two numbers agree once the second is read as billions (23.356 bn = 23,356,000,000), so the economic content is consistent and the conflict is a unit/scale error in the Q4 2025 record. The period is not the reason for the conflict: a Q4 and an FY figure at the same year-end date should match.
